On this rather short tutorial, I will show you how to make an with little or no effort (depending on your skills).
Okay, first, let's open Photoshop and make a new document 100x100 pixels (I don't care what you use, but for mine I used transparent).
Now, lets choose a cool picture to make the center of our avy.
I'll use this one of sora from Kingdom Hearts II:
Ok, next lets choose which part of the picture we would like to use as the part for the avatar. (No we're not using the entire picture, duh).
I choose... his head. Get your Rectangular Marquee tool and select around the head Like so:
After that, hit Ctrl+C (Copy) and paste it onto your 100x100 document you made (You weren't supposed to close it if you did >_>).
Re-adjust the image to your liking now throw in some text, some effects of your choice and eureka! You have your own kick-ass avatar to show off.

Okay, okay so it wasn't THAT short, but what the hell, I tried my best damnit.
Oh by the ways, my final one was done quickly I could've added whole bunch of stuff in there to make it look cooler. But remember, too many
effects ruin an image. Throw in too many and you might get FLAMED.
