Radiata Stories comes from the same people who made Star Ocean. I have been looking out for games made by Tri-Ace, ever since I played Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.
Their games’ unique gameplay systems are amazing, the battle system being the main thing. Radiata Stories is another key example of this, taking elements from Star Ocean
and adding some new features, Tri-Ace has made another game with a great gameplay system.
Story
The game starts out with Jack Russell, the son of Cairn Russell, one of the greatest knights of Radiata. Jack dreams of becoming an even greater knight than his father.
He sets for Radiata Castle to pass the knight selections trials and start to realize his dream. There are two main paths in the story, the nonhuman path and the human path.
This adds a lot of replay value to the game, as well as an even deeper storyline as you are able to see it from two points of view. Besides this, you are able to have a
new game plus instead of starting from scratch, although you aren’t allowed to keep a lot of things for obvious reasons. The comedic dialog in the game adds a very good
feel to the game. Another big thing is the fact that each character you see in towns have their own daily life. So there is a big amount of interaction with the other
characters in the game which is one of the things I liked best. You are also able to duel a lot of the characters in the game, by kicking them which also happens to be how
you find items in the game.
Gameplay
The gameplay is similar to Star Ocean in the sense that the battles are all in real time. Requiring you to do more than just simply press a button, this was the thing I
liked best about Star Ocean and it is the thing I like best in Radiata Stories. A game can have great graphics and a nice storyline, but if the gameplay sucks it is likely
not to keep your interests. In battles you have some new features besides being able to move freely and attack whenever you want, you have special abilities called links
where you can team up with your other party members and perform combos. There is also the command ability which you can give a member a certain task they will carry out in
the battle. Although the battles are not as fast pace as Star Ocean, they are still very fun.
Graphics
I find the graphics in the game to be very fitting for it. They may not be so great detail wise, but they work well. The characters however are definitely well drawn and
there is a great deal of backgrounds as far as the scenery goes. Another thing that deserves to be noticed is the fact that when you change Jack’s armor or weapons you
will be able to see that change, which is something I think a lot of games should really start doing.
Sound
There isn’t any denying the sound in this game is one of the best aspects of the game. The voiceovers are hilarious at times, yet it is in a good way that it adds to the
game in a better way. The music is very enjoyable and there is a big variety in that. I can’t really think of too many drawbacks with the sound of the game, other than
effects in the game were a bit lacking.
Radiata Stories has two endings to the game, which will definitely have you playing the game for awhile. It also offers a unique battle system, great interaction with other characters, a great storyline and loads of other things. This is a game which is definitely worthwhile to pick up and play, because it is easy to play, but at the same time it takes a lot more than the Traditional Final Fantasy games.
