Leap and Rage give Gau the ability to become the enemies he learns attacks from. While roaming the Veldt and encountering enemies, you can Leap, and after battle Gau is gone from your party. Continue to fight battles and he'll show up with new techniques he learned from the enemies you were fighting when he Leaped.
